課程概述

Composition II is a year-long course that focuses on writing full-length essays. In the previous semester, we closely examined four important writing skills: summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and arguing. These together set the core foundation for academic writing. In this semester, we will continue practicing these skills by going deeper into the “They say – I say” dialogue. A range of templates will be shared to help you formulate more complex sentences, which is essential for building nuanced, insightful, and contextually-sensitive arguments. Towards the end of the semester, we will also go through some forms of writing that many of you will encounter when applying for graduate school.

課程目標
By the end of this course you will:
- Be more confident in engaging with – and responding to – different academic texts
- Advance your skills in summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and arguing
- Continue applying these skills in writing full-length essays
- Understand the basic principles for writing a strong curriculum vitae and statement of purpose

說明
1.
Attendance and participation
30%
This includes all forms of discussion and peer review in class. Attendance is mandatory. If you will not be able to attend a class please e-mail the instructor at least two days in advance. Too many absences will hurt your grade.
2.
Workshop
20%
In groups of two or three, you are asked to take on the role of class facilitators for 30-40 minutes in W5, W6, W9, W11, or W12. As facilitators, your group will have to choose one article for the whole class to read (10 minutes; please print out copies for the entire class) and discuss (20-30 minutes; first explain why the article was chosen, and then facilitate class discussion through Q&A and/or activities). The article selected, preferably 3-4 pages long, should be about an issue that has attracted public interest and debate in the past year, within Taiwan or outside of Taiwan. The article should present some kind of stance on the issue, not just merely a summary of the issue. The discussion you facilitate may focus on the content and/or language of the article; you are encouraged to connect the discussion questions and activities to the chapters of the week.
3.
Compositions
40%
You are asked to write two compositions this semester, one evaluative (responding to one article that presents a controversial issue) and the other argumentative (responding to a controversial issue). Each composition will be graded twice (first draft and final draft, each accounting for 10% of the final grade). Each composition should be between 1200-1500 words, typed (12-point word font; Times New Roman; 1.5 spacing; name and student ID visible on each page; include word count at the end of the final page). Note: Plagiarism is not tolerated (including self-plagiarism). Plagiarized compositions will not be corrected nor given a grade. Late submissions will still be corrected, but the grade will be reduced by 50%. Please see below for the due date of each draft: First draft of composition 1: 3/8 (send to instructor via e-mail and bring a printed copy to class) Final draft of composition 1: 4/5 (send to instructor via e-mail before noon) First draft of composition 2: 4/19 (send to instructor via e-mail and bring a printed copy to class) Final draft of composition 2: 5/17 (send to instructor via e-mail before noon)
4.
 Curriculum vitae (CV) and statement of purpose (SOP)
10%
In the final few weeks of the course we will cover some basic forms of writing that many of you will encounter when applying for graduate school. Specifically, attention will be placed on writing a strong CV and SOP, as well as examining the kinds of writing tasks that frequently appear in international language tests. One or two speakers will be invited in W14 and/or W15. Please e-mail your CV and SOP to the instructor before 5/31.
